SHORT STORY COLLECTION

THE SUBCONSCIOUS MUTINY AND OTHER STORIES

A Collection of Short Fiction by Thaïs Miller

Brown Paper Publishing

2009

In her first collection of short fiction, Thaïs Miller unflinchingly navigates the intricate nuances and subjective realities of the traumatized female psyche. The eight stories presented range in subject from the aftermath of fringe-religion indoctrination to the misdirected vengeance of spurned affection to the clambering need to define with obsessive precision one’s niche in a society concerned with only the most superficial aspects of identity.

NOVEL

OUR MACHINERY

A Novel by Thaïs Miller

Brown Paper Publishing

2008

In Thais Miller’s dark fable of apathy, self destruction, and redemption a machine is invented that converts the flesh of living human beings into a source of energy capable of powering the world. First used as a means of capital punishment, the machine is soon put to use on ‘volunteers’: the terminally ill, the disenfranchised, the starving and helpless, those who feel they could do better for the ones they love by trading their flesh for monetary compensation. And as rumors spread that death by the machine produces a euphoria beyond imagination, people begin willfully sacrificing themselves to it by the hundreds of thousands. OUR MACHINERY is the story of one woman’s attempts to stop the spread of the machine, to end the swell of suicide in the name of survival, and to find solace in a world descending more and more into amorality, hopelessness, and chaos.

Our Machinery was originally published in three installments in Predicate (Brown Paper Publishing’s online and print literary journal). In 2008, Our Machinery was required reading in New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study “Writing on Wealth and Power” undergraduate course and recommended reading in American University’s “Death Penalty” honors undergraduate course.
